Come and stay at the Okarito Beach House!
The Okarito Beach House is a real haven, away from the main tourist trail. It is situated within a stone’s throw of dramatic West Coast beaches, close to the glacier township of Franz Josef.
We have two lodges available, each with three en suite double or twin rooms and one private self contained chalet. Linen and bathroom amenities are included and WIFI internet and laundry is available at an additional cost. There is no shop in the village so be sure to bring food so you can make use of our fully equipped kitchens.
Okarito itself is a small coastal community located off Highway 6, between Whataroa and Franz Josef glacier, in an area that is home to stunning scenery, fabulous sunsets, lush coastal forest and deserted beaches.
During your stay, you can kayak on the Okarito Lagoon, home to white herons (Kotuku) and paddle up estuarine rivers surrounded by rainforest. Single and double kayaks are available to rent locally or there are multiple boat trips daily, a great way to explore this birders paradise. And don’t forget the local tours to see New Zealand’s rarest kiwis, the Okarito Brown Kiwi.
Alternatively, there are several beautiful hikes in the region, the famous Okarito Trig, or along the beach to Three Mile Lagoon, both providing magnificent views of this amazing coast line.
Franz Josef glacier is only a short drive away, and we can help book you on to guided hikes and heli-hikes on the glacier or alternative activities around town.
The Okarito Beach House and royal hostel is a member of the BBH network of quality NZ hostels.
